Manali Travel Guide: Solang, Atal Tunnel, Old Manali and More
Plan a Manali trip: best time for snow, Atal Tunnel and Sissu, Solang Valley adventure, Old Manali cafés, Rohtang permits and a 4-day itinerary.

A Manali trip is the classic Indian mountain holiday. Manali, in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu Valley, is India's most popular mountain holiday, with apple orchards, pine forests, snow peaks and the rushing Beas river. With the Atal Tunnel now open year-round, it's also the gateway to the Lahaul valley and onward to Ladakh.
When to go
| Season | What to expect |
|---|---|
| March–June | Pleasant, busy; snow points above town |
| July–September | Monsoon; landslide risk, lush valleys |
| October–November | Clear skies, crisp weather, fewer crowds |
| December–February | Snowfall, cold, roads can close |
Getting there
Bhuntar Airport (Kullu) is about 50 km away but flights are limited and weather-dependent. Most people take an overnight Volvo bus from Delhi (12–14 hours) or drive. Chandigarh is the nearest major railhead (about 300 km).
Things to do
Old Manali. Cafés, guesthouses and a relaxed, village feel along the Manalsu stream.
Hadimba Temple. A 16th-century wooden pagoda-style temple set in a cedar forest.
Mall Road. Busy, touristy and fun for an evening walk and shopping for woollens.
Solang Valley. Paragliding, zip-lining, ATV rides and skiing in winter. The ropeway climbs higher for views.
Atal Tunnel and Sissu. The 9 km tunnel under the Rohtang ridge reaches the Lahaul side in minutes. Sissu has a waterfall and a lake with dramatic, stark mountain views.
Rohtang Pass. Snow for much of the season and sweeping views; requires a permit and closes for winter.
Vashisht. Hot springs and temples just across the river from Manali.
Naggar Castle. A 15th-century castle turned heritage hotel, with the Nicholas Roerich art gallery nearby.
Jogini Falls. An easy, pretty hike from Vashisht.
