Darjeeling Travel Guide: Tiger Hill, Toy Train and Tea Estates

A Darjeeling trip combines mountain views, tea and heritage. Perched on a ridge in West Bengal's Himalayan foothills, Darjeeling offers views of Kanchenjunga (the world's third-highest mountain), some of the world's most famous tea, a little steam train and a laid-back colonial hill-station charm.

When to go

  • October to December: clearest mountain views, crisp weather.
  • March to May: pleasant, with rhododendrons blooming and the first-flush tea season.
  • June to September: monsoon; heavy rain and landslides.
  • January–February: cold, occasionally snowy.

Getting there

Fly to Bagdogra (about 70 km, 3 hours) or take a train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP). Shared and private jeeps run up the winding hill road. The full toy train ride from NJP takes much longer than the road and runs on a limited schedule.

Things to do

Tiger Hill sunrise. Leave around 4 am to watch the first light turn Kanchenjunga gold. On clear days, Everest is sometimes visible in the distance.

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Take the joy ride to Ghum, with a stop at the Batasia Loop war memorial and gardens.

Tea estates. Visit Happy Valley Tea Estate or others for a factory tour and tasting. Learn the difference between first flush (light, floral, spring) and second flush (fuller, muscatel, summer).

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park. Known for breeding red pandas and snow leopards, alongside the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, founded with Tenzing Norgay.

Peace Pagoda and Ghum Monastery. Peaceful spots with Buddhist art.

Chowrasta and the Mall. The town's social hub. Have tea and cake at one of the old bakeries.

Darjeeling Ropeway. A cable car down into the Rangeet Valley over tea gardens.

A 3-day itinerary

Day Plan
1 Arrive. Mall Road and Chowrasta. Evening at a heritage café.
2 Tiger Hill sunrise, Ghum Monastery, Batasia Loop. Toy train joy ride. Zoo and HMI.
3 Tea estate visit, ropeway, Peace Pagoda. Optional day trip to Mirik or a night in Kalimpong.

Food

Darjeeling's food is shaped by Nepali, Tibetan and Bengali influences: momos, thukpa, thenthuk, sel roti, and churpi (hard cheese). Buy tea from estates or established shops on the Mall, not from roadside vendors.

Tips

  • Pack warm layers year-round; mornings are cold.
  • Book Tiger Hill transport the evening before.
  • Roads are narrow; expect traffic in peak season.
  • Carry some cash; ATMs exist but can be crowded.

Frequently asked questions

When is Kanchenjunga visible from Darjeeling?

Clear views are most likely from October to December and in March–April. The monsoon months usually hide the peaks in cloud.

Is the Darjeeling toy train worth it?

Yes. The short 'joy ride' between Darjeeling and Ghum covers the famous Batasia Loop and is a fun way to experience the UNESCO-listed railway.
