Hampi Travel Guide: Ruins, Boulders and a 2-Day Itinerary
Explore Hampi, the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara Empire: Virupaksha Temple, Vittala Temple's stone chariot, sunset points, Hippie Island and travel tips.

A Hampi trip is a journey into one of India's greatest lost cities. Five centuries ago, Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire and one of the richest cities on earth, with markets trading horses, pearls and spices. Today, its ruins lie scattered across an otherworldly landscape of giant granite boulders, banana plantations and the Tungabhadra river. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of India's most rewarding places to explore.
When to go
October to February is the best season. Summers are very hot, and the boulder landscape radiates heat. The Hampi Utsav cultural festival is usually held in winter.
Getting around
The site covers around 40 sq km. Hire a bicycle or electric scooter, take an auto-rickshaw with a driver who knows the ruins, or walk the Hampi Bazaar to Vittala riverside trail. A good guide on the first day adds a lot of context.
The main sights
Virupaksha Temple. Still an active temple, dedicated to Shiva, with a soaring gopuram. Lakshmi, the temple elephant, has been a popular sight here.
Vittala Temple Complex. Home to the iconic stone chariot (pictured on the ₹50 note) and the musical pillars that ring when tapped (tapping is no longer allowed, to protect them).
Royal Enclosure. The Mahanavami Dibba platform, the stepped tank (Pushkarani) and the remains of palaces.
Zenana Enclosure and Lotus Mahal. An elegant Indo-Islamic pavilion, with the Elephant Stables next door.
Hemakuta Hill and Matanga Hill. Hemakuta is perfect for sunset; Matanga Hill for sunrise, with views over the entire landscape.
Achyutaraya Temple and Sule Bazaar. Atmospheric and far less crowded.
Hippie Island (Virupapur Gaddi). Across the river, with guesthouses and cafés among paddy fields. Check ferry status, which can be suspended when water is high.
Anegundi. An older village with coracle rides, Pampa Sarovar and the Anjanadri Hill climb (said to be the birthplace of Hanuman).
