Switzerland Itinerary for 7 Days: Lucerne, Interlaken and Zermatt

This Switzerland itinerary covers the best of the country in seven days. A Switzerland trip lives up to the postcard image: glacier-fed lakes, chalets with flower boxes, trains that run to the minute, and mountains that seem almost too perfect. It is expensive, but a well-planned week shows the best of it.

When to go

  • June to September: green valleys, hiking, all mountain railways running.
  • December to March: snow, skiing and Christmas markets.
  • May and October: fewer crowds and lower prices, but some mountain lifts close for maintenance.

Visa

Indians need a Schengen visa. Apply through the Swiss visa application centre with flight and hotel bookings, travel insurance, bank statements and leave or business letters. Apply well before peak summer.

Getting around: the Swiss Travel Pass

The Swiss Travel Pass covers most trains, buses and boats, entry to many museums, and discounts (often around 25–50%) on mountain trains such as Jungfraujoch and Gornergrat. Scenic trains like the Glacier Express and GoldenPass need a seat reservation on top. Download the SBB Mobile app for timetables.

A 7-day itinerary

Day Plan
1 Arrive Zurich. Old town, Bahnhofstrasse, lake promenade. Train to Lucerne.
2 Lucerne: Chapel Bridge, Lion Monument, lake cruise. Mount Titlis (snow year-round) or Mount Pilatus.
3 GoldenPass or regular train to Interlaken. Harder Kulm viewpoint at sunset.
4 Jungfraujoch, the "Top of Europe": Sphinx observatory, Aletsch Glacier, Ice Palace.
5 Lauterbrunnen valley (Staubbach Falls), Grindelwald First cliff walk, or Lake Brienz and Iseltwald.
6 Train to Zermatt (car-free). Gornergrat railway for Matterhorn views.
7 Sunrise on the Matterhorn, then train to Zurich or Geneva for the flight home.

Food

Try fondue, raclette, rösti, Swiss chocolate and Luzerner Chügelipastete in Lucerne. Supermarkets like Coop and Migros have good ready meals and salads, which helps the budget. Indian restaurants exist in Zurich, Lucerne and Interlaken, and vegetarian options are widely available.

Budget (7 days, per person, excluding flights)

Style Approx. in INR
Budget (hostels, supermarket meals) ₹1,20,000–1,60,000
Mid-range (3-star hotels, some mountain trips) ₹2,00,000–3,00,000

Jungfraujoch alone is a big expense; decide on one or two "big mountain" excursions.

Tips

  • Trains are punctual; don't cut connections fine with luggage.
  • Carry layers; mountain tops can be below freezing even in July.
  • Tap water from public fountains is drinkable unless signed otherwise.
  • Many shops close early on Saturdays and all day Sunday.
